Besides being a major European airport, Athens International Airport has evolved into multiple roles and has been transformed into one of the most promising business, employment and growth engines in Greece.
Its economic impact was first revealed in a study conducted in 2009 by the Athens University of Economics and Business: its main findings revealed that Athens International Airport is a major asset for the Greek economy, with significant impact on employment, entrepreneurship and tourism, both on a local and national level.
With an annual total added value of €4.9 billion, corresponding to 2.14% of Greece's GDP and more than 63,000 jobs on a national level, Athens International Airport's business community has a key role in the national economy and society.
Specifically for the region of Attica, the airport's annual contribution amounts to 3.2% of its GDP with an added value of €4.1 billion and the creation of a total of 48,000 jobs.
In the surrounding Messogia area, the airport's status as the biggest business entity has ensured it represents 47% of the region's GDP and has boosted employment by 8,000 jobs for local residents (direct or indirect). The annual added value for the area amounts to €693 million.
AIA's total economic impact is of great significance on a national level, while on a European level, it is classified in the upper range compared with other European airports with respective impacts that vary from 1.4% to 2.5% of the GDP.
