Comprising a terminal shopping centre, parking facilities and the largest retail park in the city, AIA's airport city is geared towards retail and boasts a number of international and local brands, including a 25,000sqm IKEA store, a giant DIY shop by Leroy Merlin, the Olympus Plaza Food Park and the Dixon's-Kotsovolos megastore.
The Factory Outlet, a shop-within-a-shop concept, featuring well-known street fashion brands at discount prices, is also situated within a development called the Retail Park.
Moreover, the new state-of-the-art Exhibition Centre officially opened in 2009 providing top-notch services, offering 50,000sqm of covered space for exhibition events and over 3,000 parking spaces. The operation of the Exhibition Centre is supported by conference facilities for up to 700 attendees.
In addition to this, AIA accommodates a five-star Sofitel Hotel and provides leasing services to approximately 100 tenants for 93,000sqm of offices and auxiliary spaces.
Cargo and logistics
The existing cargo facilities at the airport comprise of four bonded cargo terminals with an annual throughput capacity of approximately 275,000 tonnes. The airmail centre, the station for veterinary and phytosanitary control with BIP (European Border Inspection Post) status as well as an office building hosting customs, customs brokers, forwarders and other affiliated services, are all located on a 13-hectare plot of land.
In order to achieve synergies, AIA introduced the Airport Cargo Community Committee (ACCC) in 2003, an active communication platform that includes all the parties in the local air cargo supply chain. Since its establishment, the ACCC has been actively working towards enhancing cargo flows, improving efficiency and quality of services and further developing the cargo market.
These joint efforts have resulted in the introduction of innovative projects such as the establishment of Minimum Service Delivery Standards (MSDS) for inbound shipments and the introduction of a Cargo Key Performance Index (KPI) to assess overall cargo handling efficiency levels.
Further projects comprise the streamlining of customs clearance processes and the generation of additional transit cargo through the introduction of multi-modal traffic (sea-air as well as road-air traffic). The development of a cargo village in the context of a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) concept is another development plan under discussion.
