The airport plays an important role both as a social partner and as a key driver for local development. A systematic and structured dialogue on all issues of concern to the local communities has contributed to a balanced co-existence with the airport's neighbours.
Regular meetings are held with representatives from the municipal authorities, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, airlines and local residents.
A Local Communities Corporate Action Plan is designed and implemented on an annual basis, covering investments related to transport, education, culture, athletics, society and the environment.
For example, in 2009 the airport funded the refurbishing of a junior high school while also providing educational equipment to other schools in the area.
Following its adoption of a local wetlands site of unique ecological value (including the construction of paths and installation of signage) a clean-up operation was organised with 150 volunteers, from the airport company the greater airport community.
