Denver International Airport
Denver, USA
The award-winning Denver International Airport (DEN) is considered by some to be the first airport to symbolise its home city, creating an international icon and a gateway to the world.
As airport processes became more streamlined and concession programmes increased within airports, Fentress began to develop the concept of an airport city as part of DEN's master plan, including hotel, retail and transit/rail components.
Fentress' successful implementation of such large, complex public projects on time and within budget has aided the evolution of this strategy within various airports thereafter.
Similar factors are evident in many of Fentress' airport designs in the past decade, notably the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport central terminal redevelopment, which features a retail hub that evokes outdoor marketplaces like the renowned Pike's Place Market in Seattle, Washington.
Other key designs include San Josè International Airport in California and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport's Terminal 2 redevelopment.
