KLIA - Environmental

KLIA is committed to the environment and any planned development will take the impact on the local habitat into consideration. This is essential for KLIA to maintain its 'green credentials' and ensure its long-term sustainability.

KLIA remains the only airport in the world to carry the coveted Green Globe (GG) certification five times in a row since 2004, earning Malaysia Airports, Gold Green Globe status.

In recognition of this distinction, Malaysia Airports was invited to share KLIA's green experience before an audience of 2,500 senior airport managers at the Airports Council International (ACI) World/North America Conference and Exhibition held in September 2008 in Boston, US.

KLIA has also received commendations from the National Energy Centre and GG for its energy conservation efforts. Moreover, it was the first runner-up in the ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practices Competition for Energy Efficient Buildings.

One of the pioneering environmental initiatives is Project Green Planet, launched at KLIA in conjunction with World Environment Day, which has helped KLIA to involve the general public in environmental issues, the role played by the industry in ensuring environmental sustainability and its generally good track record.

In addition, Malaysia Airports has named a patch of forest area within the airport perimeter, the KLIA Green Park. The park is home to about 400 unique trees and is intended for plant research and recreational activities.

A natural forest reserve has been available at the Satellite Building since KLIA was built about 11 years ago. A Jungle Boardwalk has been constructed and passengers can use the trail, readily accessible from the shopping areas. This offers the refreshing opportunity for passengers to walk through a mini jungle, with a waterfall.

Other green initiatives include reducing the airport's reliance on CFCs by using chilled water as the cooling agent in the air-conditioning system and concerted efforts to use recycled paper and biodegradable materials in day-to-day activities.

Several other projects to improve the environmental track record are in the pipeline, one of which is the implementation of an energy saving project at KLIA, which is expected to reduce costs by 25%.

KLIA has also embarked on initiatives to be carbon-neutral and as its first step, a study to determine the airport's carbon emission level is ongoing.

With such a varied and interesting aeropolis in development, KLIA may well be seen as a pioneer of airport city design going into the next decade.
