Budapest Franz Liszt International Airport (BUD) created some 9,000 jobs and generated more than €274 million for the Hungarian economy in 2009, according a study commissioned by the gateway.
Research undertaken by the University of Szeged revealed that taken together the 120 enterprises and offices located at the airport and its own operations, allowed BUD to achieve €1.2 billion of net sales revenue in 2009.
Total spending impact of BUD (direct, indirect and visitor spending) hit €1.22 billion and led to the creation of 32,000 direct and indirect jobs, the research claims.
Jost Lammers, CEO of BUD said: "These findings are highly significant and confirm the positive correlation between passenger numbers and economic impact, as well as the importance of location."
Last month, Budapest Airport unveiled ambitious plans for a new Cargo City to rival those of other European capital airports at the Transport Logistic exhibition in Munich.
Consiting of two new cargo terminals, the Cargo City's first phase will provide around 22,000sqm of new cargo and logistics warehouse space and 8,000sqm of offices - it is planned for completion in 2012.
A total of 12 cargo terminals are planned to run along the length of Runway 2, with a total floor space of 140,000sqm to be built as demand requires.
