Eindhoven Airport will spend €26 million on terminal expansion and a new hotel as it seeks to deal with a predicted 15% boom in passengers in 2011.
Passenger numbers stood at 900,000 when the terminal was built in 2005, but have since more than doubled to 2.14 million in 2010 and with further growth expected on the back of LCC services, the airport operator has announced a terminal redesign.
This will include a new hotel, an extension of the departures area and new retail and F&B offerings. Assuming construction permits are granted on time, work will begin on these projects this year and will be completed in 15 to 18 months.
Eindhoven Airport also plans to become carbon neutral by 2014.
According to the airport operator, the current terminal is no longer fit for purpose, having been built in 2005 at a time when passenger numbers stood at 900,000.
The airport is run by the Schiphol Group, which is developing an airport city at the site.
