An 18-hole golf course and luxury club house is being constructed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and talks have already begun with major sporting organisations about hosting international competitions at the venue.
Schiphol Real Estate, the property arm of Asmterdam Schiphol Airport, has partnered with Amsterdam International Golf Club, a sister company of the Netherlands' largest golf-course operator BurgGolf, which operates 10 golf courses including hotels, restaurants and golf stores, to develop the 75 hectare golf course.
The site on greenbelt land to the north of the airport will be leased to Amsterdam International Golf Club and completed by mid-2012.
Investments in and operation of the golf course will be the responsibility of Amsterdam International Golf Club.
The par-73 Championship Course, which includes a driving range was designed by former Ryder Cup captain and US Masters winner Ian Woosnam in conjunction with Mastergolf.
The design for the club house comes from architectural firm Mecanoo, with the interior will be designed by well-known Dutch designer Piet Boon.
Director of Schiphol Real Estate Andrè van den Berg said: "The area is a premium location for the new golf course, which will contribute to the continued transformation of Schiphol into 'Europe's preferred airport', offering both business and recreational facilities and services."
Marcel Welling, director of Amsterdam International Golf Club said: "The golf course will be absolutely world-class and conform to the highest international standards. The club house will also meet the most stringent quality criteria and offer a range of deluxe services, such as meeting facilities, a gym, bar and restaurant."
A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport said the golf course would form an intergral part of the Airport City development, with interest expected not just from transitting and departing passengers but also local residents.
