Göteborg Landvetter Airport will have the bulk of its airport city up and running in less than a decade, according to its head of real estate development.
Davis Bergström, head of property management said the airport had "enormous access to land that is still underdeveloped" and was planning to develop its real estate in four key areas: logistics, shopping, hotels and offices.
Quoted on the airport operator Swedavia's website, Bergström said: "We are primarily targeting strong international brands that are currently not particularly established in the Nordic region and thus bring something new to the market," says Bergström. "Porsche, which has already opened a showroom in the area, is a good example."
"With this investment, we have taken on an important role to strengthen the entire region. The idea has expanded from simply taking care of runways and air traffic to linking the area with the rest of the world," he added.
Progress is farthest along in the first category, with Deutsche Bahn's DB Schenker Logistics moving to the airport in August 2010 and now consolidating its four existing Gothenburg-based operations at a new 31,000sqm facility in the airport city.
"The choice of Göteborg Landvetter and the road network there mean, among other things, that actual distribution will be much more efficient. Plus, it is good to have all our employees in one place," said Mats Olsson, CEO of Schenker Logistics AB.
Construction is expected to be completed in late summer 2011 and Bockasjö AB, which owns the land, is in charge of construction and property development.
Bergström said logistics companies were expected to move to the new site from downtown Gothenburg to take advantage of the connectivity the airport represents, while it is understood there is strong interest in shopping opportunities at the airport.
