According to the Indian Express, the airport has been given the green light to build six blocks in the districts of Santa Cruz and Sahar that will include commercial and office space, hotels, convention centres and multi level parking lots with a total built up area of 5.36 million sqft.
"MIAL will lease land to prospective developers. It plans to have 3 to 5 five star hotels, about one to two million sq ft of commercial space including retail. The developments would come up at both sides of approach road to the international airport,'' a real estate source said.
GVK, the operator of Mumbai Airport, is looking to spend $2 billion developing 200 acres into mixed-use properties over the next 8 to 10 years.
The annoucement comes as Wadhawan-based Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd's (HDIL) resumes its work moving slum dwellers to a 'rehabilitation site' in the Mumbai district of Kurla (W) as part of the Mumbai Airport Slum Rehabilitation Project.
