Phoenix Airport shows off first Sky Train

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has unveiled the first of its PHX Sky Train cars, which will take to the rails at the beginning of 2013.

The Phoenix Sky Train is due to transport passengers between the city's regional METRO light rail system, and the airport's East Economy Parking and Terminal 4.

By early 2015 - six years earlier than originally planned - the train will serve all of Phoenix Sky Harbor's terminals.

It is then expected to continue all the way to the Sky Harbor Rental Car Center by 2020.

Bombardier, the train system operator, began shipping the first 18 cars this month.

They will be assembled into two and three-car driverless trains, which will run on an electrically powered, centre-rail guide-way.

More than 6 million passengers are expected to ride it in the first year and it will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Danny Murphy, aviation director at Phoenix, said: "The Phoenix Sky Train will forever be known in Phoenix as one of the greatest, most forward-thinking projects of our time. It will serve our customers well into the future."
