Pittsburgh releases airport city masterplan

pittsburgh intl nightPittsburgh International Airport has released an updated master plan detailing how it plans to develop its airport city and drive job and wealth creation in Allegheny County.

Potential commercial uses for its land include light industrial, warehouse, distribution facilities, high-tech and R&D, retail and hospitality. Industrial properties will be concentrated around the north west of the airport and technology around the west and south west.

"The Master Plan will help us direct the growth of the property surrounding Pittsburgh International Airport. It's a comprehensive document that we can share with potential tenants to show them why this is a desirable location for development," said Glenn R. Mahone, chairman of the Allegheny County Airport Authority which commissioned the report.

Development interest for the land surrounding Pittsburgh International Airport is "substantial and continues to rise" according to the study by IDC Architects.

Significant investment and development has already occurred at Clinton Commerce Park, Cherrington Commerce Center, and Airside Business Park.

One anchor tenant, Dick's Sporting Goods, located their World Headquarters facility and private hangar adjacent to Pittsburgh International Airport's northernmost runway.

"Shovel ready sites have been a high priority for Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato. The master plan is a significant example of desirable airport-related development. These projects illustrate considerable development interest around Pittsburgh International Airport and they are assets to be leveraged and complimented by land uses outlined in this Development Master Plan update," said Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director/CEO, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

The study includes an analysis of slopes, potential wet areas, natural corridors, existing development, and roads, which resulted in a preliminary buildable development area. Potential land uses were defined on a plot-by-plot basis, with the input and oversight of Findlay and Moon Township representatives.

Similar studies were conducted in 2003 and 2004. The 2010 Development Master Plan serves as an update to portions of the 2003 and 2004 reports. The 2010 plan accounts for new development on the airport, and also incorporates accurate mapping, data, and property boundary information.
