Taiwan aerotropolis to trial 4G mobile phone system

By Oliver Clark.

Taiwanese mobile phone network provider First International Telecom (Fitel) has announced it will base five super fast data signal stations in the Taoyuan Aerotropolis for a trial period, before rolling out the new technology across the country.

Working in a partnership with China Mobile Ltd, the world's biggest mobile phone company, Fitel will trial the WiMAX signal between July 1 and June 30 2012. This will be one of the first company's to operate in the airport's Free Trade Zone.

China Mobile will offer technological assistance while local notebook maker Quanta Computer will provide equipment and terminal devices.

Earlier this week, Wu Den-yih, the Premier of Taiwan, said it was essential the aerotropolis be developed in a way that would allow it to compete with neighbours such as Incheon and Shanghai Pudong.
