Polish Airports' State Enterprise (PPL) has hired consultancy firm Ove Arup & Partners International Limited to examine how best to turn the land around Warsaw's Chopin Airport into an 'airport city'.
The Polish airport authority, which operates the gateway, has awarded Ove Arup the €263,000 contract to carry out a study into the possibilities of developing the airport land into what will become known as Chopin Airport City (CAC).
The first stage of work will involve creating an image of what Chopin Airport City will look like, showing how it can be used for business, commercial or recreational purposes.
The company has 30 weeks to produce its findings.
Aleksandra Matuszewska, PPL's Chopin Airport City project co-ordinator, said: "We chose Ove Arup because we felt it had the best approach to working with us and the most experience with similar projects both in Poland and abroad.
"We also appreciated the company's understanding of sustainable growth projects.
"At PPL, we are very serious about protecting the environment and want this to be reflected in the Chopin Airport City project."
Chopin Airport City is a long-term project involving the transformation of 10 hectares of space in front of Terminal A into a business and commercial park with recreation and entertainment facilities.
